Badly rated films with awesome Soundtracks

Brad

So I'm the kind of person that associates more with something if I appreciate the music

For instance as a comic fan you would think I would prefer The Avengers film due to the many geeky moments and references in the film, but I much prefer Guardians of the Galaxy due to a great use of the 80s soundtrack

There are many films that a lot of critics say are really bad, but if it's got a great soundtrack I'll appreciate it all the more

So I count any film below 50% on Rotten Tomatoes as badly rated, although that's just their opinion. I have a different opinion on these films

Spawn

Rotten Tomato Rating

1 out of 5 (19%)

The Film

Based on the Todd MacFarlane comic of the same name, Spawn is about a guy that does a deal with Malebolgia, one of the devils of the levels of Hell, to be brought back to life.

Being a deal with the Devil this of course goes a bit wrong and is brought back as one of his HellSpawn, to lead his monsters when the war between Heaven and Hell breaks out

All Al Simons wants to do though is see his wife again.

The film was alright, the CGI has aged quite a bit and is quite cheesy but it sticks quite closely to the source material with only a few changes which is nice, it was at that time though in the late 90s when Batman & Robin had just come out and was the decline of the superhero genre, but only for a while :D

The Soundtrack

The soundtrack is such a great concept. They brought together popular rock bands at the time including MetallicaKornSlayerMarilyn MansonSilverchair and Powerman 5000 with well-known DJs and electronic producers such as The Crystal MethodRoni SizeThe ProdigyStabbing WestwardFilterIncubus and Orbital

It's this that gives it such a unique sound, and is a soundtrack I listen to quite regularly to this day

Get Over It

Rotten Tomato Rating

2 out of 5 (44%)

The Film

Berk has been dumped by his long term girlfriend who only seems to be interested in popularity. He obsesses over her and wants to get her back despite her being a complete bitch and obliviously misses the advances of his hot blonde friend who likes him for who he is

All this is going on at the same time that Martin Short, in a fantastic role as the schools drama teacher, is trying to put on a production of A Midsummer Nights Dream

I had never seen this film before until friend and fellow Geek Masher Kayleigh showed it to me, it was a laugh riot and a pleasure to watch from start to finish

The Soundtrack

It's a great mix of covers and normal songs and the intro song reminded me a lot of the breaking the 4th wall moments in There's Something About Mary when the background artists would break out into song while looking directly at the cameras

Grease 2

Rotten Tomato Rating

1 out of 5 (18%)

The Film

Taking place 2 years after the original film and still set at Rydell High School,  we follow a new student, the clean-cut British Michael Carrington (Alistair Smythe in the Spider-Man 90s cartoon), cousin to Sandy from the original film

It follows the same plot as the original film but the genders are reversed, with Michael trying to learn how to ride a motorcycle to impress Michelle Pfeiffeiffeiffeiffeiffeiffeiffer

I've got to admit this is a completely guilty pleasure film for me, it's so bad and cheesy but so good at the same time!

The Soundtrack

Full of great guilty pleasure songs, and some awesome singing from Michelle Pfeiffer

Okay, I'm sorry for all the cheese, there's some awesome songs coming up, I SWEAR!!!...

Mighty Morphin Power Rangers - The Movie

Rotten Tomato Rating

 out of 5 (50%)

The Film

While the Rangers are doing some awesome skydiving to raise some money for charity and then some rollerblading throwing out some cheesy one liners, in another part of town an ancient evil is awakened to bring down the teenagers with attitude

This walking ball of pink snot called Ivan Ooze drains Zordon of his energy and the energy of the Power Rangers, so with his last burst of strength, Zordon of Eltar sends the Rangers off to the planet of Phaedos to earn the power of the Ninjetti to take Ooze down

The movie had some really awesome looking leather suits rather than the spandex we were all used to in the tv series, but is let down with some cheesy CGI later on

The Soundtrack

Featuring an awesome cover of Stevie Wonder's Higher Ground from the Red Hot Chili Peppers, plus some awesome tracks from Devo, Van Halen, They Might Be Giants, Buckethead and *ahem* Shampoo...

Tank Girl

Rotten Tomato Rating

2 out of 5 (38%)

The Film

Based on the awesome comic book by Alan Martin and Jamie Hewlett (the guy who created the look of the Gorillaz)

Tank Girl and her friends are the only remaining citizens living in the wasteland that is Earth, where all the remaining water is controlled by Water and Power, the mega corporation/government that runs the territory. While incarcerated at W + P, Tank Girl and her new friend Jet Girl break out and steal... a tank and a jet

This film man....eugh.

It had some awesome ideas but a pretty bad script, and the best bits in the film were the animated segments, mostly in the middle and end of the film. If you've seen those you have seen the best bits of the film

The Soundtrack

The soundtrack was put together by Courtney Love... yeah...I know right!?

Featuring an awesome new version of Devo's - Girl U Want, recorded specifically for the film because they were such big fans of the comics, plus it was the first time that Bjorks - Army of Me appeared. Big Time Sensuality was also in the film but not on the actual released soundtrack. I've not put a Bjork song here as one appears later

The rest of the album is full of awesome songs by female artists to which Laura Barcella wrote in the book The End describing it as a "who's who of '90s female rock"

Batman Forever

Rotten Tomato Rating

2 out of 5 (41%)

The Film

After two awesome films from Tim Burton, the Bat franchise started it's mid 90s decline here with the director Joel "Bat Nipples" Schumacher taking over.

It had some good fan moments, like Robin throwing out the "Holy Rusted Metal, Batman" line with the callback to the 60s show and Jim Carrey did a good turn as The Riddler but there was just too...

Much...

NEON!!!!!!!

The Soundtrack

The rest of the album has some big names like The Offspring, Nick Cave, The Flaming Lips and a different version of Iggy Pop's the Passenger, covered by Michael Hutchence
But nothing compares to these three songs, Seal - Kiss From A Rose was an instant classic and still gets airplay to this day, U2 - Hold Me, Thrill Me, Kiss Me, Kill Me is just epic, whether you are a fan of the band or not, and PJ Harvey is just always awesome

Even if you think you've seen it already, make sure you watch the U2 video for some added awesomeness

Sucker Punch

Rotten Tomato Rating

1 out of 5 (23%)

The Film

A young girl (Baby Doll) is locked away in a mental asylum by her abusive stepfather where she will undergo a lobotomy in five days' time. Faced with unimaginable odds, she retreats to a fantastical world in her imagination where she and four other female inmates at the asylum, plot to escape the facility.

Sadly with it's overuse of CGI and the way it used the music in the film, critics deemed it as either one long music video, or just looking like one of those videogame cutscenes

Me?

I loved it for those very reasons!

It was incredibly stylised and not everyone is gonna be into that

The Soundtrack

Music plays an integral role in the film, each piece of music was picked carefully for the action or dream sequences for each scene, evoking a certain emotion with each one
The soundtrack is filled with covers of songs, some sung by the main star Emily Browning, and the rest feature spectacular new versions of Bjorks - Army of Me and Iggy Pop and the Stooges - Search and Destroy, both made all the more awesome by featuring Skunk Anansie in the former and the band fully on a roll in the latter

It also has an awesome version of Love is The Drug, sung by Oscar Isaac and Zack Snyder favourite Carla Gugino

Daredevil

Rotten Tomato Rating

2 out of 5 (45%)

The Film

Young Matt Murdock is hit in the head by some toxic chemicals, which roll down the sewers and create the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles but that's a whole other story

He loses his sight and he trains to use his other senses, creating a sort of "radar sense", ready to take on the bad guys as Matt Murdock - Attorney at Law by day and Daredevil - The Man Without Fear at night

A lot of people didn't like this film, but to them I say YOU'RE BLIND JUST LIKE MATT MURDOCK

Seriously though, check out the Directors Cut, the story makes a lot more sense and Matt uses a lot more of his Daredevil special senses throughout the film

or you could...you know...just watch the New Netflix Daredevil

WHICH IS BLOODY BRILLIANT BTW!!!

The Soundtrack

Some great rock songs from The Calling, Fuel, Seether, Moby, Hoobastank and also Evanescence - Bring Me to Life, the first major appearance by Evanescence which would lead to the song reaching number one in the UK, US, Italy and Australia

  1. Apt description of why Batman Forever was bad-- too much neon!
Party Animal. Maybe I enjoyed the film once.... I guess I occasionally still do enjoy it but anyway it has a great early 80s punk/new wave soundtrack.

    1. I've not heard of that film before, but the synopsis looks pretty bad

  2. Great list – especially for the inclusion of Spawn, Daredevil and Sucker Punch. There's a lot of great music in these films.
The only song I'd add to the list would be Marilyn Manson - Long Hard Road Out Of Hell

    1. Cheers :D

Yeah I was pondering whether to add that but I think the other three songs on the album are better personally

If I added that one in as well, I'd have to have 4 tracks for all the other films
