Why Transformers The Movie is THE Best Film of All Time!

Brad

    It just is...

Oh you want me to make the argument for it?

    Here we go then...

So as a kid I used to watch this film constantly with one of the other Geek Mash team - Danto

It came to a point where one day I think we watched it three times in a row, because not only was it a great Transformers film, it was also something that surpassed the original tv series set before and after in every single way possible

The old episodes are kind of a joke to watch them now, but to this day I STILL rate Transformers The Movie (1986) as my favourite movie of all time

    Why you might ask?

    The First 8 Minutes

It starts off with a race of peaceful bots, just living the life. The kids are happy and playful, the adults are doing some research in a lab

Then we see the complete destruction and annihilation of a world, with this huge ringed planet just up and eating it, this was genocide on a whole new level and in some movie based on a frickin toyline!

The way this is shown is just immense, from the way it's lit and the destruction from the bots perspective on the planet is heartbreaking when we've only seen them on screen for about 30 seconds!

And eating the planet just so he can turn on his ring lights, this is some serious shit right here

And then we get THE best rendition of the Transformers theme EVER!

Just look at those credits, it looks like the awesome Christopher Reeve's Superman intro and dat voice cast tho! More on them later

After the credits we cut to Cybertron where Megatron has taken over ruling, and the Autobots are hiding out in a secret city and are running two of the moon bases, Jazz and Cliffjumper in charge of Moon Base 1, Bumblebee and Spike in charge of Moon Base 2

We learn that Spike is all grown up and has a son back on Earth called Daniel!

The Autobots don't have enough Energon to power an assault to take Cybertron back so Ironhide, under Optimus' command, readies a shuttle to take them to the Autobot city on Earth to stock up

Unfortunately for them the Decepticon Laserbeak has been recording all this and reports back to Soundwave and Megatron to relay the information

Megatron, Starscream and a bunch of other Decepticons then proceed to ambush the shuttle and SLAUGHTER the Autobots onboard

I'm talking utter carnage, beloved 'Formers that you've grown up with being destroyed on screen!

ALL OF THIS IS ONLY THE FIRST 8 MINUTES!!!

Okay Ladies and Gents, now the intro is out of the way I'm gonna go over some other points on why I think this movie is so great

It's SPOILERS from here on out so...

    ...

    ...

    Still here? Good

It introduces one of THE best Transformers EVER

Yeah I'm talking about Hot Rod

He may be young and cocky when he's introduced but that's the whole point of him.

He's here to go on a journey of discovery and become a more mature Bot, sure he may make some awful decisions on the way, like...

    oh I don't know...

    Getting Optimus Prime KILLED!!!

During a fight with Megatron that Optimus was already winning, Hot Rod jumps in and is taken hostage, leading to Optimus getting killed

Yep, old Orion Pax kicks the bucket big time in the movie, and passes on the Matrix of Leadership to Ultra Magnus

This ups the stakes big time, before we were only talking about maybe bit part characters dying, but this one?

It hurt, as a kid and even watching it now, you think of loved ones you have lost. It was a major deal to have one of the main characters die in something back then

He even turns grey to rub salt into the wounds even further

Bah Weep Gragnah Weep Ninny Bong?

    Ah the Universal greeting

You can tell who is a Transformers fan if you say this out loud on a London Underground train, I mean sure they may not reply...

    At all...

Even if you sing famous theme tunes...

but you WILL see the smile on their faces, and that's all that matters...

    right?...

    RIGHT!!!???

Maybe It's because I didn't offer out any Energon goodies...

    The Music

Sadly it's likely the only people you would recognise on the soundtrack these days is Weird Al Yankovic or Stan Bush if you're a Transformers fan

The Stan Bush songs are used as the main themes in this movie, with both Dare and You've Got The Touch played in key moments of the film and played twice, both near the beginning and then the end, used as bookends and shows the passing of the torch to the new generation of Transformers

Plus that moment Prime first Transforms and You've Got The Touch starts playing?

    Goosebumps everytime!

Nothing's Gonna Stand In Our Way is still my favourite though, and when it plays in the film it shows off Hot Rod and his abilities

    The Voice Cast

This is THE biggest voice cast, just look at these names that were added just for the movie!

    Judd Nelson as Hot Rod

You'd know him as Bender from The Breakfast Club and the Sheriff from Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back

    Leonard Nimoy as Galvatron

You'd know him as Spock from Star Trek or William Bell from Fringe

    Robert Stack as Ultra Magnus

You'd know him as one of the ground control people in Airplane or parodying his Unsolved Mysteries TV series in Baseketball

    Eric Idle as Wreck-Gar

You'd know him as one of the Monty Python crew or as Rincewind in the Discworld games

    Orson Welles as Unicron

You'd know him for the guy on the radio from War of the Worlds and the main character in Citizen Kane, plus parodied with much love and affection from Maurice Lamarche as Brain from Pinky and The Brain

    Awesome One-Liners

This movie is full of 'em, here are some examples

Hot Rod: We can't hold out forever Kup, but we *can* give them one *humongous* repair bill.

Springer: I've got better things to do tonight than die.

Rumble: First we crack the shell, then we crack the nuts inside!

Unicron: I have summoned you here for a purpose.
    Megatron: Nobody summons Megatron.
Unicron: Then it pleases me to be the first.

Optimus Prime: One shall stand, one shall fall.
Megatron: Why throw away your life so recklessly?
Optimus Prime: That's a question you should ask YOURSELF, Megatron.

Perceptor: Ultra Magnus, a cursory evaluation of Decepticon capability indicates a distinct tactical deficiency!
Ultra Magnus: In other words, Perceptor...?
    Springer: We're outnumbered!

    Wreck-Gar: Happy motoring. Cock-a-doodle-doo!

Spike: It isn't even dented! Oh shit! What are we going to do now?

    First time viewers opinion

So I introduced this to another of the Geek Mash team - Kayleigh, and here are her thoughts on it as a first time watcher

So do you have any experience with these Transformers?

I remember having a video tape me and my brother used to watch around our great nan's house as a kid, but I don't really recall any of it! Therefore, I think I'm pretty clueless to be honest!

Who's your favourite character in the film?

I love cocky and arrogant, wise-cracking and funny characters in stuff, so I'm plumping for Hot Rod!

It gets a bit dark for a kids film don't it?

Yeah, lots of death and destruction! I was surprised by how many deaths actually occur in the film, especially of familiar and popular characters too. I think as a kid though, you tend to gloss over the brutality in cartoons. You're watching it for the explosions and the characters, bright colours and stuff. It definitely becomes more apparant when you're watching it as an adult!

    What's your favourite music track?

"Nothin's Gonna Stand In Our Way." Totally cheesy, but pretty motivational!

If you could describe the film using only 3 words what would they be?

    Action, Robots, soundtrack!

    What was your favourite part?

I loved seeing the Dinobots in action. They're pretty cool, and takes me back to my childhood dinosaur obsession. :)

    Bonus Trivia

The whole look of the Transformers movie changes constantly, as there were five different studios working on it to get it finished in time

Due to this, Hot Rod transforms 4 different ways in the film

This was Orson Welles' final film before his death on October 10, 1985 at the age of 70.

Megatron (Frank Welker) is transformed into Galvatron (Leonard Nimoy). In the television seasons that followed, Welker took over the role of Galvatron. Welker had previously provided the voice (screams only) for Spock in Star Trek III: The Search for Spock (1984), which Nimoy appeared in and directed.

In season's 1 and 2 of the series, Megatron's first shot in gun mode always missed every autobot. Starscream using him to kill Brawn in the beginning marks the first and only time that his first shot hit an autobot and every shot also hit its target.

The band who sings the songs on the soundtrack called "Nothin's Gonna Stand in Our Way" and "Hunger" is listed on the soundtrack credits as Spectre General, but the band's name is actually Kick Axe. When the soundtrack was being assembled, they thought the name "Kick Axe" sounded too threatening, so they listed them as "Spectre General". The band was not notified about the change.

Almost all of the new characters that appear in the movie were newly designed. The Hasbro toys were based on the movie's character designs. The exception was Ultra Magnus, who already had a toy in the Japanese "Diaclone" line. His character model was based on the toy, and given new colors.

Optimus Prime's death become something of a running gag later on. Almost every transformers series, (including Beast Wars) features Optimus Prime (or his equivalent) dying, only to be resurrected some time later.

    Post film

The series pretty much took a nose dive after this because of the lack of voice cast, and they couldn't write for the more mature Rodimus anymore, and it was filled with lots of silly stories

Despite this though the legacy of the film lived on, it established several story concepts that have been used repeatedly in the years since 1986, some of which are now integral to the whole of the Transformers Mythos including the Matrix of Leadership and Unicron

To an entire generation of young fans the movie was the most visually spectacular and narratively epic Transformers experience of their entire youth

It's no wonder it's stuck with me for so long...

    So who's YOUR favourite Transformer?

    It better not be Wheelie!!!
