World Turtle Day - Brad's Top 12 Fictional Turtles

Brad
It's World Turtle day!

I <3 Turtles

I think growing up with the TMNT cartoon has greatly influenced my affection for them

So with that in mind I'm gonna post about my top 12 favourite Turtles in fiction

Why 12?

I couldn't leave any of these out!

According to Wikipedia, Turtles are reptiles of the order Testudines (or Chelonii) characterised by a special bony orcartilaginous shell developed from their ribs and acting as a shield
The meaning of the word turtle differs from region to region. In North America, all chelonians are commonly called turtles, including terrapins and tortoises. In Great Britain, the word turtle is used for sea-dwelling species, but not for tortoises.

In this case I'm gonna go with the North American version just so I can include all kinds of the cute little armoured fellas :D

Got all that?

Now on with the list!

12. Gamera

What's he from -

  • The Gamera films
Why him?

He was originally created to rival the success of Godzilla, but people just saw him as the poor mans version of it

Not me though, after Power Rangers this was my first real experience seeing any kind of Kaiju monsters, I got the DVD for free on the front of Play magazine in the UK, a videogame magazine that also had features on Japanese films and Mangas

He raised in popularity in the US due to his movies being played on Mystery Science Theatre 3000, featuring skits from the cast played over the movie

I've had a special place in my heart for him ever since

11. Mr Turtle

What's he from -

  • My Name is Earl
Why him?

Do anything to Mr Turtle and Mr Crabman will hunt you down!

It was a joy to see a mans love for a turtle in this series - "Why do men wait so long to tell their pet turtles how they feel? You need to say those simple words 'I Love You'"

When Darnell thought he was dead, a gravestone was created in his honour stating he was Jewish and 113 years old

10. Tortimer

What's he from -

  • Animal Crossing
Why him?

The mayor of your town in Animal Crossing from the second game in the series, he would visit your town during certain holidays

In AC: New Leaf he decided to retire and set up his own self named island living in the lap of luxury

Some villagers theorise that he got incredibly rich off the turnip market

9. Crush

What's he from -
  • Finding Nemo
Why him?

'Cause we were like, "woaaaah.", and I was like, "woaaaah." and you were like, "woaaahh..."

A sea turtle that helps Dory and Marlin find Sydney via the East Australian current

He cares incredibly deeply for his son "Squirt" and shows Marlin that you have to send your kids off on their own path

8. Fillmore

What's he from -
  • Sherman's Lagoon
Why him?

He stars in a comic strip by Jim Toomey that features in a lot of newspapers across the world. It focuses on a lazy great white shark called Sherman and his many friends and foes

Fillmore is the lonely bachelor type character of the strip, mainly as the straight-man in jokes

He possesses a kind heart, and most of the time simply wants someone to talk to.

I can relate...

7. Tiptup

What's he from -
  • Diddy Kong Racing
Why him?

Tiptup is one of only two lightweight characters in DKR, with fast acceleration and good turning abilities

I love those kind of characters in games

6. Cecil

What's he from -
  • Warner Brothers Cartoons
Why him?

If you're of a certain age and I mention the story "The Tortoise and The Hare" to you it's a good bet that you'll be thinking of one of the classic Warner Brothers cartoons with Cecil taking on Bugs Bunny

WB retired him after his third appearance, but since then he has had many cameos including in the film Space Jam, the online shorts in Looney Tunes: Reality Check as well as special appearances in Animaniacs and the Sylvester and Tweety Mysteries cartoon

5. Koopa Paratroopa

What's he/she from -
  • The Mario Bros. series
Why him?

Koopa Paratroopas (also known as ParakoopasSky Troopas in Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars, or simply Paratroopas), are Koopa Troopas with wings.

I always felt sorry for the little fellas when I bopped them in midair, making them lose their wings and fall down a pit.

4. Filburt

What's he from -
  • Rocko's Modern Life
Why him?

He was originally introduced as a bit part character but by the end of series 1 he became one of Rocko's best friends

Word of God says he used to be handsome and athletic, but a case of unrequited love sent him into a downward spiral, which entailed a stay at a mental institution and culminated in his present Nerd status.

3. A'Tuin

What's he/she from -
  • Discworld
Why him?

I'll just let this description from Discworld - Colour of Magic speak for itself...

In a distant and second-hand set of dimensions, in an astral plane that was never meant to fly, the curling star-mists waver and part...
See...
Great A'Tuin the turtle comes, swimming slowly through the interstellar gulf, hydrogen frost on his ponderous limbs, his huge and ancient shell pocked with meteor craters. Through sea-sized eyes that are crusted with rheum and asteroid dust He stares fixedly at the Destination.
In a brain bigger than a city, with geological slowness, He thinks only of the Weight.
Most of the weight is of course accounted for by Berilia, Tubul, Great T'Phon and Jerakeen, the four giant elephants upon whose broad and startanned shoulders the disc of the World rests, garlanded by the long waterfall at its vast circumference and domed by the baby-blue vault of Heaven.
This right here is what made me fall instantly in love with the series, just the plain absurdity of it all!

Sadly the author Terry Pratchett passed away this year but his memory lives on with his fantastic series of books and his beloved fans, of which I am proud to say I am one of them!

2. Squirtle

What's he/she from -
  • Pok√©mon
Why him?

"Squirtle Squirt!"

Indeed!

The only starter that really mattered in the original games

Charmander* who?

*Nobody picks Bulbasaur

1. Donatello

What's he from -
  • Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles
Why him?

As a kid and even now people would always assume that I loved Michaelangelo because I loved the colour orange so much, I once swapped colour pencils with everyone in primary school so I was only left with orange ones!

Donatello was different though, he was geeky, knew how to work with machines and like me he was a lover not a fighter, using a bo staff defensively rather than the other Turtles pointy weapons
