Back To The Future Day

It's Back To The Future day!

21st October 2015 is the date that Marty McFly and Doctor Emmett Brown landed their Delorean in the future. Of course, not everything they experience has actually happened yet (close to a Hoverboard soon though!), but it was fun to see their own theories in Back To The Future Part II regardless.

To celebrate Back To The Future Day, the Geek Mash team have answered a few questions, sharing many of their favourite moments, quotes, characters and more. Join us as we celebrate this fantastic trilogy!

Favourite BTTF Film?

I was tempted to go with Back To The Future Part II, but I think it has to be the original. I loved the set-up, being introduced to Marty around Doc's clock-filled house, plectrum in hand and guitar attached to an oversized amp. Cranking it up to 11, he quite literally blows himself away by the power of rock. This is heavy! From then on, I just loved the perfect blend of action and comedy and the friendship between Doc and Marty. Plus I love 50's stuff, so this was perfect for me!
Favourite Quote?
"I guess you guys aren't ready for that yet. But your kids are gonna love it!"
Favourite Character?
Marty McFly! I know its a bit of an obvious one, but Michael J Fox is one of my personal heroes. He's such a legend. Also, if the main character loves a bit of rock music, rocks some Converse and plays guitar, well then that's good enough for me.
Favourite Moment in the Films?
I love the Johnny B. Goode scene in the Enchantment Under The Sea Dance. Love that song!
Favourite Delorean (standard, flying, train?)

I think it has to be Back To The Future Part II's Delorean. It flies and is powered by rubbish!

Why do you love Back To The Future?

There really aren't many films around nowadays that I can truly say are as special to me as the Back to the Future trilogy. They just nailed it. It's a perfect blend of comedy and action, and the time travel aspect is handled really well. So solidly written, I never get tired of watching all three films countless times!

What time period would you love to visit if you had a Delorean time machine?

I love the Tudor period, so I think I'd like to take a trip back and discover this.

What item from the trilogy would you most like to own?

I have two! Either the machine that turned tiny packet pizzas into huge ones, or the Hoverboard!

Brad

Favourite BTTF Film?

Has to be 2, it's the perfect time travel sequel. The first built on the idea of travelling backwards in time and back to the present, but 2 has so much more than that.

Future time travel, we get to see into the future, a time of when the movies came out that was still reachable by fans of the film, 2015 was going to be amazing with hover cars, Pepsi in crazy new bottles, power laces and best of all a Café based on the 80s! The decade with the best music in my opinion

Building on top of that you have the alternate timeline tangent, where we get to see an alternate present day Hill Valley, ruled by Biff of all people, where Doc Brown has been committed, George McFly has been murdered and worst of all Lorraine has some monstrously plastic titties

Then we get to see parts from the 1st film but from a different perspective, in the Johnny B Goode case this is literal. Plus it ends on one of THE best cliffhangers of all time, where 1955 Doc has just sent HIS Marty Back To The Future which leads me on to my favourite quote

Favourite Quote?
Young Doc: No! It can't be; I just sent you back to the future!
Marty McFly: No, I know; you *did* send me back to the future. But I'm back - I'm back *from* the future.
Young Doc: Great Scott!

Favourite Character?

Has to be Doc Brown, chronologically from his timeline, he gets a young crazy kid coming into his life telling him he's travelled through time in an invention of his creation. How could you stand up to that kind of pressure? Well he figures...What the hell

Doc invents the flux capacitor which makes time travel possible. Never mind figuring out how, it just does. Lampshaded by Marty.

Marty: Flux capacitor... fluxing.

Also for all his life Doc has been a lover of two things, the sciences and westerns, and in the third he gets to travel back in time to the old west to live out his fantasies whilst falling in love.

Favourite Moment in the Films?

For me it's the repeat moments across all three films:

-You have the "Mom...mom is that you?" scenes with Marty waking up from a supposed nightmare
-Biff/Griff/Mad Dog and his gang chasing Marty across the main town.
-"SLACKERS!"
-"Hey McFly, I thought I told you never to come in here!"
-Manure
-Marty checking out the changes in the town all three times (starting with the 'Mr Sandman' version in Part 1).
-and Marty riding on skateboard/hoverboard and holding onto vehicles

Favourite Delorean (standard, flying, train?)

My favourite film is 2 but gotta go with the train. It adds a great aesthetic especially with the wheels and connecting rods becoming the hover parts and the back end having the same air vents as the delorean

Why do you love Back To The Future?

Other than being a solidly written trilogy?

To this day there are still new things I am discovering with the film, and I have watched this countless times.

For example there is now the theory online that there actually about 6 different timelines across the films that also explains the differences in Marty's personality between 1 and 2. In 2 he suddenly starts getting really worked up if somebody calls him chicken. Marty never had this trait in the first film. That's because Marty makes a crucial change to this timeline in the fact that he makes his dad George, a man known to be a pushover, to stand up to his bully Biff. This creates a change in personality for alterna-Marty and as Marty goes back to the newly created timeline he merges his personality with the old one.

What time period would you love to visit if you had a Delorean time machine?

The far future...let's say the year 3000?
I've heard not much has changed except they live underwater

What item from the trilogy would you most like to own?

So many cool items to choose from!

I'm gonna go with the obvious but not so obvious. I'm sure my fellow Geek Mashers would go with a Hoverboard which is a superb item, but they're forgetting about the Pitbull! It has awesome controllable twin rockets and works on water, plus a handy carry case and tow cables for my friends so we can all ride together.

Favourite BTTF Film?

Back to the future Part II.

Favourite Quote?
"Why don't you make like a tree, and get out of here."

Favourite Character?
I do love Marty but Biff is just so stupid he is funny. :)

Favourite Moment in the Films?
The whole Enchantment Under The Sea Dance in Back To The Future Part 1.

Favourite Delorean (standard, flying, train?)

Flying of course.
Why do you love Back To The Future?
It has a great mix of humour and fun plus to this day nothing is like it

What time period would you love to visit if you had a Delorean time machine?
The future, but if had be past be the Roman times.

What item from the trilogy would you most like to own?
The Delorean nothing beats it.

Favourite BTTF Film?

The original Back To The Future, hands down. Whilst part II has some great ideas and part III is an interesting re-telling of the original, there’s just no substitute for the film that started it all. The climax when Doc Brown is climbing the clock tower is still honestly one of the most exciting moments in movie history (Alan Silvestri’s score is just perfect).

Favourite Quote?

"Doc: I warned you about this kid. The consequences could be disastrous!

Marty: That's a risk you’re gonna have to take! Your life DEPENDS on it!"

Not the most quotable moment in the film, but Marty’s desperation to save the Doc from the future gets me every time.

Favourite Character?

This was a tough one, but I’m gonna go with Doc Brown. Watching the movies, he’s like your mad uncle that your parents are a little embarrassed about but is just the coolest adult in your life who teaches you to never just do what’s expected of you and that “your future is whatever you make it, so make it a good one”.

Favourite Moment in the Films?

The climax of BTTF. Marty is trying to start the Delorean and Doc is trying to reconnect the wire connecting the clock tower to the cable in the street. Both of them are racing against time. If they miss, Marty is stuck in 1955 forever. The stakes are so high and everything has built up so flawlessly to this moment, it’s impossible not to be swept up in the movie magic (and again, THAT SCORE!).

Favourite Delorean (standard, flying, train?)

From a story perspective, I prefer the standard Delorean before it was outfitted with any of the gadgets as it presented a set of limitations that prevent the characters from using it as a tool to fix all problems. From a personal perspective, if I could chose one, I’d go with the flying Delorean because FLYING CAR. Traffic would never be a problem again (until the invention of Skyways) and it’s a little more practical than that bulky train.

Why do you love Back To The Future?

Back To The Future is an example of film-making that unfortunately is sorely lacking in modern cinema. It has a clear protagonist who is likeable, a memorable cast of fun characters and high-stakes challenges and threats for our hero to overcome. Also, that scene where Marty plays Johnny B Goode was what inspired me to become a musician.

What time period would you love to visit if you had a Delorean time machine?

I’d like to go hang out in the 1960s/70s for a while and go see some of the amazing musicians around at the time. I’d probably wind up getting arrested during the civil rights protests whilst I was there though!

What item from the trilogy would you most like to own?

It may be unethical, but it’s gotta be Gray’s Sports Almanac. The ability to make a small fortune would be pretty sweet!

Favourite BTTF Film?

The original is my favourite. It sets up the story for the whole series and isn't as "over watched" as the other two films.
It's a great standalone story but it leads directly into the sequel.

Favourite Quote?

1.21 GIGAWATTS!

Favourite Character?

I'm tempted to say George McFly but... just no.
It has to be Doc Brown. He's an obvious choice but he is THE crazy old man who built a time machine.
The majority of his lines are really funny and he's played by the fabulous Christopher Lloyd!

Favourite Moment in the Films?

The epic train scene at the end of the third. Where Marty escapes back to the future (yeah, I know) and Doc Brown stays behind to be with his love.
Such a fantastic scene!

Favourite Delorean (standard, flying, train?)

Oh come on now. Who doesn't want a flying car?
It's the best version by far. It's got the standard look but it flies!
The best part? No train tracks required!

Why do you love Back To The Future?

It's a great series of films. They all work together and as separate entities.
It's a great time travel story.

What time period would you love to visit if you had a Delorean time machine?

I'd like to visit the future! See how it all works out and see if I can get a space flight module fitted onto the Delorean.

What item from the trilogy would you most like to own?

Can I have a time travelling Delorean? No?!
In that case I'd probably choose the Hydrator. How good would that be?
Did you even see that pizza?
As a technology it would have so many practical applications for other industries too.

Favourite BTTF Film?

My all time favourite BTTF film has to be Back To The Future 2. Seeing the future, past and even an alternate 1985 showing the ramifications of messing with the slightest thing during time travel. The added benefit of seeing the first film from a second vantage point was awesome too.

Favourite Quote?

It has to be the classic Biff quote "Why don't you make like a tree... and get out of here!"

Favourite Character?
Marty McFly.

Favourite Moment in the Films?

My favourite moment in the films is the Hoverboard chase scene in Back to the Future 2. It almost exactly mirrors the skateboard chase scene from BTTF but adds that futuristic flare of what 80's films thought the future would look like.

Favourite Delorean (standard, flying, train?)

My favourite Delorean was the flying Delorean, especially when Doc knocks Biff out with the door!

Why do you love Back To The Future?

My love for the Back to the Future films traces back to the 80's and 90's when either BBC or ITV used to show at least one of the films every bank holiday weekend. Also whenever I ended up at home sick from school I used to watch the Films as they always helped me feel a little better. The notion of time travel has always intrigued me, the butterfly effect especially. One little change and the world as you knew it is gone.

What time period would you love to visit if you had a Delorean time machine?

I would, much like the Doc, like to visit the American Old West. However the future I believe would hold the greatest draw for me. I would love to see where humanity ends up (hopefully like Star Trek!).

What item from the trilogy would you most like to own? (e.g. Hoverboard)

Hoverboard. Hopefully within the next few years we will be granted those beauties in one form or another.
