The Muppets Top 10 Cover Songs

The Muppet Show is a family-oriented comedy-variety television series that was produced by puppeteer Jim Henson and features The Muppets

From the Muppet Show, the Muppets went on to have
8 Feature films
2 direct to TV films
8 spin off TV shows
and about 27 TV specials

The 3 most enduring things about The Muppets are
1. The Comedy and jokes
2. The Characters
3. The music

Today I'm going to be looking at the various covers the Muppets has featured over the years and put together my Top 10 favourites

I also did a sister post in which you can read about the Top 10 Original Songs here

10. Feelings

Feelings is a song written by Louis Gasté and Brazilian singer Morris Albert.

Over the years Feelings was performed by many other vocalists including Ella FitzgeraldNina SimoneEngelbert HumperdinckShirley BasseyJulio IglesiasDobie Gray and Johnny Mathis.

Here it's covered by Beaker with his trademark Mee-Mee's

9. Dancing With Myself

In this clip from Muppets Tonight, Dennis Quaid covinces Gonzo to dance with himself when Camilla and the chickens pull out of a performance

Dancing With Myself was originally recorded by the band Generation X and was later performed by Billy Idol for his first solo album.

8. She Drives Me Crazy

She Drives Me Crazy, with the addition of parody lyrics by Jim Lewis, is performed by Kermit and Miss Piggy as the opening number on the Kermit Unpigged album.

Featuring a slew of celebrity cameos in the video, including  Phil CollinsGilbert GottfriedDavid HasselhoffHelen HuntCasey KasemRicki LakeDenis LearyLeslie NielsenOzzy OsbourneConan O'Brien and Bruce Willis.

Piggy calls Kermit to talk about their relationship , and both sing parts of the song. The number ends with Piggy hanging up on Kermit.

7. Rock Lobster

Rock Lobster was originally written and performed by the B-52's and in this clip from Muppets Tonight it is taken quite literally

Also appeared in the public mind recently when Peter Griffin from Family Guy decides to burst into song while playing on his guitar

6. In The Navy

Originally performed by the Village People, this version from the Muppet Show features Link Hogthrob of Pigs In SPAAAAAAAAAAACE fame going on a Viking rampage, minus the raping and pillaging of course, this is a family show!

5. Forget You

In The Muppets, Kermit and friends are struggling to raise money for their theatre, before a rich oil tycoon buys them out.

Desperate times calls for desperate measures so they decide to put on a telethon, there is a genius Barber Shop Quartet version of Smells Like Teen Spirit by Nirvana but for the pure LOLZ I've gone with Camilla and the Chickens singing Forget You, yes you read that right - Chickens!!!

4. Mah Nà Mah Nà

When people think of The Muppets they mainly think of two songs, The Rainbow Connection which is featured in my other Top 10 and Mah Nà Mah Nà

"Mah Nà Mah Nà" debuted as part of Umiliani's soundtrack for the Italian film Svezia, inferno e paradiso (Sweden: Heaven and Hell), an exploitation documentary film about wild sexual activity and other behaviour in Sweden. The song accompanied a scene in the film set in a sauna which gave its original title "Viva la Sauna Svedese" (Hooray for the Swedish Sauna).

It became better known from its use in a recurring blackout sketch for the 1969-70 season of The Red Skelton Show, the fourteenth episode of Sesame Street, and the first episode of The Muppet Show

3. Bohemian Rhapsody

In November 2009, the Muppets released a rendition of Bohemian Rhapsody that was released as an online video on YouTube. The video became a viral hit and received over 10-million views within its first two weeks!
The recording used the original instrumental tracks recoded by Queen in 1975, as such the release has been billed as being recorded by "Queen + The Muppets."

Pepe the King Prawn (my favourite Muppets character) gets my favourite line and pose, look out for it at 1:50

2. Mr Bassman

This was originally part of the original Muppets Song list but I didn't realise that it was actually a cover of a Johnny Cymbal song!
Sung by Floyd Pepper and Scooter, and backed by Dr. Teeth and the Electric Mayhem, on an episode of The Muppet Show.

1. Once In A Lifetime

One of my favourite songs of all time originally performed by The Talking Heads

This video has Kermit performing the part of David Byrne in the video, including the chopping on the arm part, which I was told in a nightclub when I was dancing along to this song and performing the action that it actually means cutting cocaine!
