Merry Christmas From Geek Mash!

Merry Christmas!
We have loved running Geek Mash since we launched in February this year. As well as being a great thing to collaborate on between 9 close friends, we are proud at how it has grown to become the blog we know and love today!

Geek Mash begun as a blog to share our geeky interests. Since then, it has expanded to include a YouTube channel, ever-growing Facebook and Twitter and we have hosted guest posts at various points in the year. At the beginning, we started as a group of 6 (Phil, Kayleigh, Neil, Ross, Matt, Brad), expanding to include three more recruits (Dan, Jason and Casey) shortly after.

We all thank you from the bottom of our hearts for the support, and hope you have a fantastic Christmas! The team have shared their personal thank you's below.

Growing a Geek - Neil

Growing A Geek is a series of blog posts about our influences for being a geek. Using the music from TV, Films and Games to help show you what makes us the geeks we are today.

I will be going on a blog induced nostalgia trip to show you what I liked between the ages of 0 and 12 that have shaped the person I am today.

A Geek Mash Christmas - Films

Every year around the same time all the TV channels start to play the Christmassy classics.

Unfortunately that month is normally October, which is way too early.

The proper month to watch Christmas films is December.

'Tis the season after all.

Today, some of the Geek Mash team share their favourite Christmas films.

Growing a Geek - Brad

Over the next few weeks several of us here at Geek Mash will be sharing music from TV, Games and films that helped shape who we grew into as geeks. We have set a limit on 15 pieces to let you our readers have an insight into who we are

When Rossteffer first said about doing this I thought awesome and wrote down my list pretty much straightaway but I got to thinking, these were my favourite songs from the genres, rather than the ones that actually influenced me growing up so I put a lot more thought into it and I have to say it was pretty awesome thinking about it.

I got goosebumps going on a complete nostalgia trip

Star Wars Q&A with Geek Mash!

With Star Wars Force Awakens just around the corner, I thought I would do a Q&A with the rest of the Geek Mash crew and see what they thought about Star Wars with a few questions about the series. Star Wars Force Awakens is going to be the biggest movie released this year, and has generated a massive amount of hype ever since the initial teaser was released at the end of 2014. The movie has already sold millions of tickets from pre-bookings, merchandise is absolutely everywhere and is definitely shaping up to be the most anticipated movie in the last few years.

The franchise has been around since 1977 with Star wars IV: A New Hope, which was followed after with two more successful movies which holds one of the most famous lines in movie history "I am your father". In 1999, George Lucas brought back the series with the first movie called The Phantom Menace this didn't hold well with fans taking away the charm from the original movies being mainly in CGI and followed up with another two movies being only slightly better than the one before but still not holding the same charm from the original trilogy.

Thankfully in 2012, George Lucas sold Lucasfilm to Disney for $4.05 billion. Disney soon announced three new films in the franchise, promising fans that they will honour the original movies. We're all hoping that Star Wars Force Awakens is a credit to the series which brings the franchise back on track.

I hope you enjoy the answers from myself (Casey), Brad, Kayleigh and Neil.

Growing a Geek - Rossteffer

Music plays such an important part in all our lives sometimes without us ever knowing. Over the next few weeks several of us here at Geek Mash will be sharing music from Games, Films and TV shows that helped shape who we grew into as geeks. We have set a limit on 15 pieces to let you our readers have an insight into who we are. This week I am going to take you through my nostalgia fueled fever dream of musical inspiration.

I shall start with TV, because of all my choices TV has by far the most number of musical memories from my childhood. I hope you all enjoy / enjoyed them too.

1. Thundercats.
When I was very young I discovered Thundercats and much like almost every other 80's cartoon every show had a lesson to be learned. Throughout the season the Thundercats creed inspired me. Truth Justice Honor Loyalty. One of the strongest memories of my childhood is playing with my Thundertank and every time I would this piece of music would always play in my head.

2. Knightmare
Okay, as a fan of Fantasy and Role Playing games Knightmare was definitely going to feature in this post! A lone adventurer was guided through a blue screen adventure by a group of 3 to 4 friends watching back in the "safe and warm" castle keep. The intro music is so iconic to this day it whisks me back to my childhood years.

Brad's Top 5 - Post Apocalyptic Films

So Fallout 4 came out recently and it got me thinking about other Post Apocalyptic stories

These stories are often set after a great Nuclear War, but it could be anything that sets it off

One of the main themes running throughout these stories is that humanity survives and the way we come together after a great tragedy

This time I look at my favourite film stories

5. Mad Max: Fury Road

Following a nuclear holocaust, the world of Mad Max is set in a future where water and gas are scarce commodities and everything is a desert wasteland

The main protagonist of these stories is Max Rockatansky, well...I say main protagonist but the main thing with these Mad Max films is that they are stories each to themselves, you could take Max out of it and it wouldn't only make a little difference

The real main character in Fury Road is Furiosa, an awesomely written bad ass lady with a prosthetic robotic arm. There's this really evil dude, the tyrannical Immortan Joe who has a harem of ladies that Furiosa decides to save

The film is basically one big car chase but an awesome one at that with some great moments including a guy on a car in a gimp suit, playing a flame throwing guitar with speakers blaring out while attached to a bunjee cord

Among the Sleep PS4 Review

Oh hai! Jason here. Thanks to the lovely Krillbite Studios I'm happy to say I'll be reviewing the PS4 version of their unique horror game Among the sleep before it hits the Playstation store, Unless you're reading this some time in the future in which case save some of that moon money for me. Among the sleep was originally released back in May 2014 but we're now getting to see it on the PS4 as of December the 10th. The game is also playable on Oculus Rift but won't be coming to Playstation VR for reasons the the team explain here.

So what exactly is among the sleep about? Well the big hook of among the sleep is its rather unique protagonist...a 2 year old child. Krillbite have done their very best to interpret how the world would come across to a 2 year old with the world full of objects that seem much larger from your child like perspective and every creepy noise feeling more amplified and oppressive. Much of the games horror comes from the fact that simple things seem much more terrifying to such a young child. The game starts fairly gently as the un-named nipper that you play as is having birthday cake with his Mother who then carries him off to his room. After playing around a little and meeting the games guide, your brand new Teddy, your Mother puts you too bed. This is when an unseen force seemingly takes teddy away and tips over your cot.

Rise of the Tomb Raider Review

There have been many games I've been excited for this year, but unfortunately a few have fallen short of my expectations (I'm looking at you Metal Gear Solid 5). Tomb Raider earned a reboot in 2013, which I felt was a refreshing and welcome addition to the series. After enjoying this so much, I couldn't wait for the sequel.

Summer 2014 brought the announcement that Tomb Raider was getting a sequel and I couldn’t wait. I was disheartened at first as I found out it was an Xbox One exclusive for a year and I didn’t want to wait. However, earlier this year I bought an Xbox One so that I could enjoy some of the games I was interested in, such as Killer Instinct, Dead Rising 3 and Sunset Overdrive.

I have been a fan of the Tomb Raider series since I played the first one on the Sega Saturn. The Tomb Raider series offered something that not many games did for the time. It offered a strong female lead, combined with a a great story, a huge, exciting adventure and new gameplay. Upon it's 1996 release, it was clear that Tomb Raider was set to be one of the most successful franchises of all time. The series did dip for a few years after mixed receptions on titles such as Angel of Darkness, but I am happy to say that now the series is back and better than ever, thanks to this new take on the famous adventurer.
