Pokémon 20th Anniversary

It's Pokémons 20th Anniversary today

The original games Red and Green were released in Japan on the 27th of February 1996

The Blue version was released a year later with graphical updates and the versions released in the West as Red and Blue were based on this game

The series has gone on to spawn lots of iterations, spin offs, tv series and merchandise and it has become a phenomenon across the world

So as the saying goes "Gotta Catch 'Em All!" and there are currently 721 of the critters and that number will only increase with the newly announced Sun and Moon versions.

With that announcement plus the originals just released on the 3DS it is a great time to be a fan of all things Pokémon

So here at Geek Mash we put our collective heads together to answer some Questions about this great series

Caseychu

Favourite Pokémon?
Charmander or pikachu both super cute but then charmander does turn into a badass charizard :)

Favourite Starter if different to your favourite?

Of course it would have been charmander but because that was already my favourite it would have to be tododile. Awesome Pokemon and very funny in the series :)

Favourite Gen?

1st gen all the way as its what I grew up with, I could still name all of them all these years later.

Favourite Type?

Psychic even though I love fire, psychic is a hard type to beat

If you could pick any 6, who would your team be?

Charizard, Snorlax, Pikachu, Mew, Bayleef and Dragonite

Name and describe a new Pokémon:

Cheesasuarus - it is a cheese dinosaur that can take impact from all attacks as it's soft and can stop enemies in their track by throwing melted cheese at them.

If you could combine Pokémon with any other film, game or TV series, what would it be?

Xenoblade chronicle X so then we get a full on world with huge creatures wandering around in 3D. The world would be all believable and feel alive

Favourite game?

Has to be Pokémon Silver. I input so many hours into that game, collected every Pokemon even super rares and levelled my whole team to 100.

Pokéfusion:
I would fuse Snorlax and Charizard together then it can be big a winged fire ball of death

Kayshrew

Favourite Pokémon?
Snorlax or Sandshrew

Favourite Starter if different to your favourite?

Squirtle!

Favourite Gen?

1st gen. It's the one I grew up with really!

Favourite Type?

Fire. Pyromaniac all the way. :P

If you could pick any 6, who would your team be?

Sandslash, Charizard, Pikachu, Snorlax, Eevee and Oshawatt

Name and describe a new Pokémon:

Something resembling Stay Puft Marshmallow man. Gotta have the perfect combination of cute but threatening!

If you could combine Pokémon with any other film, game or TV series, what would it be?

Ooh, an open world RPG would be pretty cool. Skyrim! Imagine more gritty versions of Pokemon and the Dragonborn battling them. :D

Favourite Game?

I actually got into Heart Gold A LOT when it came out. I think it had something to do with that Pokéwalker it came with. I loved improving my Pokémon whilst I was out and about on walks!

Pokéfusion:

I decided to fuse Horsea with Diglett, which on the Pokemon Fusion website created a Horslett! :)

ChaNeil

Favourite Pokémon?
Chansey. Though a massive shout out to all of the hard to catch from Gen 1.

Favourite Starter if different to your favourite?

The correct choice is Squirtle. Although I had the blue version so I'm biased.

Favourite Gen?

Gen 1 is the only one I've played so Gen 1 will have to be my favourite.

Favourite Type?

I think that Psychic is my favourite. I find it to be one of the more interesting types in the game.

If you could pick any 6, who would your team be?

Blastoise, Charizard, Venusaur, Pikachu, Chancey and Mewtwo.

Name and describe a new Pokémon:
Effarig - A new and mystical Pokémon has been sighted. Thought to have a long spotted neck, 4 legs, and bumps on it's head.

If you could combine Pokémon with any other film, game or TV series, what would it be?
I think it would be weird and interesting to cross Pokémon with Disgaea. The world of Pokémon would fit in well with the tactical battle gameplay of Disgaea. It might also be funny for Ash and his Pokémon pals to take over the Netherworld.

Favourite game?

I think it's pretty obvious that I'm going to choose Pokémon Blue. I have played some of the other Pokémon games briefly but for me Blue is the original and the best.

Pokéfusion:

I would fuse Machoke with Magikarp to get the "Sexy Magikarp" cosplay into the game as canon.

AlakaDaan

Favourite Pokémon?
I always loved Alakazam. Before you got to the end of the game and got hold of Mewtwo (the Pokémon equivalent of the nuclear option), having a strong Alakazam on your team was a good tool for tackling some of the stronger gym leaders.

Favourite Starter if different to your favourite?

I suppose it depends on what you’re looking for from the game. I regularly choose Bulbasaur when I’m playing as he’s a great all-rounder to start the game with (he makes mincemeat out of the first two gym leaders), but he is the easy option. I remember my very first time playing through the game, I chose Charmander (I think I thought he was cool because FIRE!) and BOY, does that make the game harder. Whilst at first I thought I’d made a huge mistake, I’ve since developed a respect for that choice as a way of playing the game on expert mode.

Favourite Gen?

Unlike some of my more experienced colleagues here at Geek Mash, I only ever got as far as Red, Blue and Yellow, so I’m firmly in the first generation of Pokémon (i.e. my Pokédex only goes up to #151). I saw a few of the Gold/Silver generation Pokémon when I watched the cartoon and thought some of them were pretty cool, but I never got around to those games.

Favourite Type?

Any Pokémon that were a cross of flying and some other type were great as they were impervious to that otherwise devastating “Dig” attack.

If you could pick any 6, who would your team be?

It’s important to have a well-rounded team so that you can tackle Pokémon of all different types. Bear in mind that my knowledge of the series only really extends as far as the original 151, my ideal squad would be
  • Venusaur – Great all-rounder and effective against Rock/Ground and Water types
  • Charizard – Powerful fire attacks to take out Grass types
  • Blastoise - Hench and powerful Water type to head of Fire and Ground types
  • Zapdos – Electric Pokémon to face down Water and Flying types with the added bonus of immunity to ground attacks like “Dig”
  • Mewtwo – The aforementioned instant victory card, game-breakingly powerful Psychic attacks combined with versatility in learning new moves.
  • Primeape – Fighting Pokémon to over-power most non-Psychic types plus the ability to learn Ground moves to help tackle Electric Pokémon

Name and describe a new Pokémon:
Ladies and gentlemen, I give you Warhog! He’s a pot-bellied pig that bursts into flame (Human Torch style) and charges at his foes to inflict a devastating Fire-blast attack!

If you could combine Pokémon with any other film, game or TV series, what would it be?
It’s my go-to answer for most things, but I’d quite like to see a Doctor Who story set in the Pokémon world. I imagine he’d have a few things to say about the practice of forcing caged animals to fight for the glory of their masters and the amusement of spectators.

Favourite Pokémon Game?

Like I said before, I never really made it past the first generation of Pokémon games, but I always loved Pokémon Yellow since I got into the cartoon before I ever played the games and I liked the way Yellow brought the original game into line with the cartoon without making any drastic changes to the core gameplay. From a practical standpoint, I liked the fact that Yellow allowed you to acquire the 3 starting Pokémon and incorporate them all into your squad

Pokéfusion:

Probably a Raichu and a Golem or an Onix. If you were to combine a Ground type with an Electric, you’d have a pretty unstoppable combination.

Whilst I have your attention, has anyone ever thought about how weird it is that Pokémon in the cartoon, with certain exceptions, are only able to say their own name? That’d be like going up to a dog in the real world and having them snap back with “Dog! Dog, Dog, Dog!”

Squirtley

Favourite Pokémon?
Gotta go with Squirtle! The first Pokémon I chose all those years ago. He evolves into Wartotle and Blastoise and gets freaking cannons coming out of his back. Didn't much like his Mega Evolution though in the newer games. The original Squirtle is still the best. Also my favourite episode of the Animé is the episode "Here Comes The Squirtle Squad" where a team of Squirtles become fire fighters due to their awesome water skills and the leader ends up going with Ash. I love turtles, you can check out a post about my favourite turtles HERE.

Favourite Starter if different to your favourite?

Froakie from X and Y. He evolves into a freaking ninja called Greninja who uses his long tongue as a scarf with it flapping about. He also has some cool moves like water shuriken and of course lick with his tongue, plus he learns a lot of moves different to his water type like ghost, fighting, dark and psychic making him a formidable foe

Favourite Gen?

2nd gen with Gold and Silver. It added 100 new Pokémon when the list still felt like there weren't too many. There's over 721 now!
It also added a time system with morning, day and night cycles and days of the week, where some creatures could only be caught during the day or night, plus certain events only happened at certain times and days. Unfortunately this put a massive drain on the internal battery so if you had the games back then the saves would have been wiped by now.
Items were stored in different parts of your bag, so all your balls were in one section, all your healing items and all your special items like the bicycle and fishing rod, much better than G1 with the long list.
It introduced shiny Pokémon to the series. These were Pokémon that had different colours to the norm and whilst you only had a 1 in 8192 of actually catching one, everyone could catch a shiny red Gyarados as part of the story.
These games were re-released and updated on the DS with Pokémon Heart Gold and Soul Silver with a new Pokéwalker pedometer where you could take your creatures on the move and level them up

Favourite Type?

Well with all I've chatted about so far it's likely that you think that water type is my favourite and you'd be absofreakinglutely right!

If you could pick any 6, who would your team be?

Okay with this list I'm gonna go with one I use from each gen just to make it a little different

  • Gyarados - A water type that's a Dragon Fish, what's not to love?
  • Steelix - A steel and ground type which is the evolved form of Onyx, very powerful
  • Solrock - Rock and psychic. Looks like a freaking cool Sun
  • Luxray - Electric lion type. Gotta love the cats
  • Hydreigon - Dark and Dragon type that looks like a Hydra. Hydra's are always useful in Magic The Gathering
  • Pyroar - Fire and normal type lion. The male has a mane representing the Kanji for Daimonji (), where you send off visiting spirits during their visit to the Obon festival. The females have a long ponytail mane

So there you go, no real strategy to why I use them but I do like to use a lot of combined types

Name and describe a new Pokémon?

A lot of Pokémon have already been invented, some of which have been a set of keys, an ice cream cone and a pile of garbage. Plus Neil and Dan created Pokémon that already exist in this very post (Girafarig and Tepig and his evolutions respectively).
Thats the trouble with having over 721 of them. You have 3 electric mice NOT including Pikachu and his evolution line (Plusle, Minun and Dedenne)!
So my Pokémon would be extremely meta. A creature that's actually a Nintendo Handheld console so you can play Pokémon whilst fighting with it at the same time.

If you could combine Pokémon with any other film, game or TV series, what would it be?

I would combine it with one of my all time favourite series - Transformers.
Have the normal Pokémon but if two of the same type are fighting each other, say car vs car, you could choose to race instead. With plane vs plane or helicopter you could have a mid air battle. For the gun types like Megatron you could have lightgun battles between trainers.
Plus you could use the Pokémon to traverse the world which in a newer generation should be more open world than we have currently.

Favourite game?

Well Gen 1 Red and Gen 2 Gold and Silver were the only games I ever did to completion but the one I had most fun with was Y. It was the first game to use proper 3D animated models that closely matched the appearance from the tv series and card games of the creatures rather than the 2D sprites previously used.
It also introduced the Mega Evolution mechanic, giving a much needed boost to the old fighting rules and making your creatures more powerful.
The thing I liked the most though were the online functions where you could send out one of your caught Pokémon to a random trainer, and receive a random one back. Most of the time you would get a lower level or one you already had, but every so often you would get a Pokémon from the other version of the game, another of the starters that you hadn't chosen or a really powerful levelled up creature.

Pokéfusion:

I would fuse a Farfetch'd with a Haunter and teach it gust of wind
