Feature Friday #2 - Andrez Bergen

What got you into art?

My parents. They were both amateur artists (but good ones) and got me into the whole shebang as soon as I could unravel my mitts. Straight after that? Comic books. Hand-me-downs from Marvel's swinging 1960s bullpen. In high school, the dadaists opened my eyes to other possibilities.

Who is your favourite character to draw?

Captain America, along with my own characters Southern Cross and Bullet Girl (Click HERE to check out our review of it - Brad). When I was a kid, Stormtroopers were #1.

What do you hate drawing?

Backgrounds. ;)

Favourite artists?

Jack Kirby, Jim Steranko, Steve Epting, David Aja, Mike Lark, Graeme Jackson, Emma Rios, Frantz Kantor, Fabio Moon, Sean Phillips, Marcel Duchamp and Terry Gilliam.

What mediums do you use?

Oils, water colour, inks, pencil, photography, digital software, and especially collage.

When you're drawing, what do you put on in the background?

Usually music. Anything from classical to Japanese enka to experimental electronica. Depends on the subject and the mood I want to get into. Sometimes silence is best!

What's your greatest achievement?

Over all? My daughter Cocoa. Creatively-speaking, the development I guess of the world of Heropa (an off-shoot of near future, last city on Earth Melbourne). Most of my novels and comics are at least partially set in that space.

What would you say to any aspiring artists?

Hang in there — and believe in your work. It's possible no one else will, but your definition of art is your contribution to the medium, and it's better to pursue that course than bend it to suit others' tastes.

Do you have any projects lined up?

Lordy... heaps. Funnily enough, mostly as writer. I'm novelizing my comic book series 'Bullet Gal', have a story with Australian artist Chris Wahl in the April edition of British anthology 'Dirty Rotten Comics', an ongoing series called 'Magpie' with artist Frantz Kantor in the pages of Australian 'zine 'Oi Oi Oi!', a new comic called 'Crash Soiree' with artist Graeme Jackson, and 'Tobacco-Stained Mountain Goat' #2 — which I'm illustrating as well as writing — for Project-Nerd Publishing in the U.S. I like being busy.

Marvel or DC?

Marvel.

Chocolate or vanilla?

Chocolate.

Captain America or Iron Man?

Definitely Captain America!

Finally if you could take any character and draw them in a new comic, who would it be and who would you choose to write it?

Ha Ha Ha... can I be self-indulgent and say I'd like to be writer and artist? Captain America. Weird, I know, since I'm Australian and I live in Japan. But I love Steve Rogers as a concept/individual.
