Feature Friday #5 - Joseph Blythin

What got you into art?

My dad. When I was young, he would bring home copy paper from the factory he worked at and we would have "draw-offs" with my mum being the judge.

Who is your favourite character to draw?

When I was little, I used to love drawing the disproportionately  huge characters from my comic collection: Juggernaut, Hulk, Kingpin. Nowadays I (try) and draw portraits of characters from whatever I'm interested in at the moment. I'm not particularly good, but so long as I get some semblance of a likeness, I'm happy!

What do you hate drawing?

Legs. I have no idea why, I just really hate them!

Favourite artists?

I love Pre Raphaelite art so either John Millais or Waterhouse.

What mediums do you use?

Ive only ever use pencils.

When you're drawing,  what do you put on in the background?

Frasier. Or Slayer.

What's your greatest achievement?

I once entered a competition whilst I was at university to design a video game; I drew up a few villains - Hi-8, a homicidal VHS tape housed in a Nazi Robot, Lord Bayonet, a gangster lightbulb with a spiked magnifying glass as his weapon of choice, and finally Teddy Volt- a businessman with a TV for a head and the hero of the story. I didn't win, but they put my work up in a gallery in Cambridge, which I was very proud of.

What would you say to any aspiring artists?

Just keep drawing. Draw everything all the time.

Do you have any projects lined up?

Haha no, I've only ever drawn for myself and my own enjoyment.

Marvel or DC?

Always Marvel!

Chocolate or vanilla?

Vanilla

Captain America or Iron Man?

The Cap'. I'm beginning to loathe the arrogance that seeps out of Downey Jnr.

Finally if you could take any character and draw them in a new comic ,  who would it be and who would you choose to write it?

Definitely Spider Jerusalem. Somehow travelling back in time and gouging the eyes out of Donald Trump. And I wouldn't want anyone other than Warren Ellis writing that gold!
