5 Times My Mum Was Cutting Onions When I Was Trying to Watch TV

My mum is always cutting onions and preparing dinner when I try to watch certain movies and she does it with tv shows too

I dunno why she does it, it's always at the same point too, it's like she does it deliberately

There are some total spoilers in this so be forewarned now

Lets take a look at some of them now shall we?

#5 - ER
Lucy and Carter get stabbed

ER is about a group of doctors working guessed Emergency Room

From the pilot episode we follow the story of new intern John Carter as he learns the ropes and becomes a fully fledged Doctor himself

He takes on a new student Lucy Knight in series 5 and in series 6 things take a tragic turn

Having performed a spinal tap on a patient trying to discover what is wrong with him, Lucy tries her hardest to convince John to get a psych consult on him but he is too busy.

Whilst the rest of the ER staff celebrate Valentines Day with loud music and food, Lucy is bleeding to death on the floor and John soon gets stabbed

The two episodes where at the end of the first they get stabbed and the following episode where the rest of the ER is trying to save their lives is pretty intense tv and my mum must have been cooking a lot of onions that day

What was my mum preparing?

Viennese gulasch

The people of Vienna love gulasch so much they’ve taken the Hungarian dish and made it their own. The secret is to use lots of onion. If you don't like your food too hot, then reduce the amount of paprika to suit your taste

Preparation method

  1. Heat the oil in a large pan. Add the butter and skinned sausages and cook for a few minutes, stirring to ensure all the meat browns.
  2. Add the onion to the pan.
  3. Grate the potato including the skin and squeeze over the sink to remove any moisture.
  4. Add the potato to the pan.
  5. When the pan ingredients are cooked, crack the eggs into the pan. Serve.

#4 - Doctor Who
Vincent And The Museum Visit

In this episode we meet Vincent Van Gogh, a down on his luck artist suffering from depression and some deep seeded issues and visions of a monster

The Doctor and Amy Pond find out that the visions of the monster are true. After defeating it they show Vincent the future and that his paintings are beloved by a lot of people

Sadly he still has his demons and commits suicide

What was my mum preparing?

Sweet onions with lentil stew

This lentil stew is so comforting – the warm spices are given a delicious lift by the mouth-watering, sweet caramelised onions.

#3 - Futurama
Fry's Nephew

See people would think that my mum would start preparing onions with his dog Seymour but it actually happens in this episode instead

After getting Frozen on Dec 31st 1999, Fry leaves behind his Mum, Dad and brother Clancy. Whilst looking through his old house in Old New York Fry thinks that his brother has stolen his lucky four leaf clover and taken his name put the truth is much more poignant

Clancy has a son that he names in honour of Philip's memory

What was my mum preparing?

Southern-style pork and beans

A simple but generous vegetable and pork dish that’s rich in fibre and flavour. We temper the chilli heat with fat-free Greek yogurt.

#2 - The Simpsons
I Hope You Like Your Present!

Bart has always been a bit of a dick to his sister, so much so that she is used to being disappointed when it comes to her birthdays

At the same time Michael Jackson is in their house and he helps Bart write a song about just how much he cares about her

Mum catches me off guard with the onions everytime

What was my mum preparing?

Onion bhajis with mango salsa
Tasty warm or hot.

For the onion bhajis

For the mango salsa

#1 - Buffy The Vampire Slayer
I Don't Understand

Buffy The Vampire Slayer is all about the supernatural so it came as a massive shock in series 5 when Buffy's mum died of a brain aneurysm

It's an incredibly serious episode and deals with death in which no other show has before or since I think

In this bit, Anya used to be a demon and doesn't understand all the ins and outs properly of being a human yet and asks some very tough questions

What was my mum preparing?

Nothing, I was genuinely sobbing...
