Feature Friday #8 - Dan Fish

What got you into art?

I read a lot of comics as a kid. I remember a Jack Kirby Inhumans story in a UK annual that was epic and mind expanding, then Geoff Seniors painted Transformers art made a big impression and got me hooked.

Who is your favourite character to draw?

Probably Batman, there are so many interpretations, he's easy to doodle in whatever style you fancy.

What do you hate drawing?

People high-fiving. It's an action that doesn't translate well into comics.

Favourite artists?

There are so many!

In no particular order: Frank Quitely, Mick McMahon, Geoff Senior, David Mazzucelli, John Ridgway, Phil Jiminez, ...So many I'm forgetting.

What mediums do you use?

I normally draw with a regular hb mechanical pencil, then scan with the iPad, and ink and colour digitally.

I use a fiftythree Pencil stylus, and have just switched from the Brushes Redux app to Procreate, which seems really versatile.

I use Pow! Strip Design app for lettering and creating comic panel layouts.

When you're drawing,  what do you put on in the background?

Normally some reruns of old comedy shows, or old TV clip shows.

What's your greatest achievement?

Getting away with it so far.

What would you say to any aspiring artists?

Draw a whole story (not just pin-ups), it will force you to draw things you might not otherwise.  Try new things. There are plenty of scripts available online if you need to practice. Try to be diverse.

Do you have any projects lined up?

I'm currently drawing a film review for Electric Sheep magazine, and will soon be hosting some after-school clubs to hopefully nurture some future talent. And hopefully some more of the marketing comics I've been doing for a multinational corporation in the electronics industry. But I am available for hire for your illustration needs!

Marvel or DC?

Distinctions are pointless! There are lots of great comics from independent publishers outside the big two. I generally avoid Marvel and DC because the crossovers are too intrusive. Although I am currently enjoying Red Thorn, which DC Vertigo publishes.

Chocolate or vanilla?

Chocolate please.

Captain America or Iron Man?

Iron Man I suppose, depends who is writing and drawing them!

Finally if you could take any character and draw them in a new comic ,  who would it be and who would you choose to write it?

I'd happily draw the adventures of Lego Doctor Who. I'd write it myself and double my paycheque.

And finally as a special treat, you can print out one of Dan's pages and make your own comic whilst inventing your own Transformer

Just fold in half width ways, then fold in half again
